About the event

This is our 36th event. We are so excited to be hosting our first webinar- "How Responding to the Fukushima Disaster Taught Us What to Expect With COVID-19". We are featuring team Safecast. Safecast is an international, volunteer-centered organization devoted to open citizen science for the environment. We will also speak about the cultural and governmental differences in how US and Japan are combatting Covid 19.

Speaker Bio:  AZBY BROWN is a native of New Orleans, and has lived in Japan since 1985. A widely published author and authority on Japanese architecture, design, and environment, his groundbreaking writings on traditional Japanese carpentry, compact housing, and traditional sustainable practices of Japan are recognized as having brought these fields to the awareness of Western designers and the general public. His books include The Very Small Home (2005), Just Enough: Lessons in living green from traditional Japan (2010), and The Genius of Japanese Carpentry (2014). He joined the Faculty of Architecture at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in 1995. In 2003 he founded the KIT Future Design Institute in Tokyo, focussing on cognitive and cultural issues surrounding the human hand and its use in the creative process, conducting collaborative research with neuroscientists and perceptual psychologists on the neurobiology of the hand and hand-based creativity and communication. His creative work has been widely exhibited at galleries and museums internationally.

Since the start of Fukushima Nuclear Powerplant disaster in March 2011, Azby has been a core member of Safecast, a highly successful global volunteer-based citizen-science organization devoted to developing new technology platforms for crowdsourced environmental monitoring which promote open-source and open data principles. He is Safecast’s lead researcher, and is primary author of the Safecast Report, closely involved with assisting affected communities and analyzing and reporting the issues they face. In addition, he is involved in the group’s day-to-day operations, including education and outreach, and represents Safecast at international academic conferences and expert meetings. A sought-after speaker on both Japanese culture and the scientific and social consequences of disaster response, Azby is frequently quoted by major media outlets who seek a credible, critical, and independent voice to counter partisan talking points.

tele-net (America) was founded in Japan in 1994, with the hope of providing omotenashi-inspired customer service to the world. Their beginnings probably looked similar to yours—a tiny office; a small but dedicated team; a mission to succeed no matter what. They now have operations in four countries, providing services to companies throughout Japan, and the world. tele-net understands Japan’s dedication to detail and quality. They also understand that great customer service is crucial to your success in a new market. Having been in the customer service industry for over 25 years, they’ve supported many companies as they went from startup phase to international brands. Consumers will have great expectations of your offering, especially being a startup from Japan. Part of that expectation will be the high level of service that Japan is known for. By partnering with tele-net, not only will your customers experience omotenashi-inspired care, but you’ll have an ally that understands your vision and can accommodate the ever-changing needs of your growing company. To learn more about how they can help support your US and/or Japanese customers, contact them at pcandrus@tele-net-global.com. (www.tele-net-america.com)

We hope that this event will be a place where people from Japan and New York alike can come to collaborate. Looking forward to seeing you all!
